Essential Oils Benefits What are Essential Oils and How Do They Help?
Along with aromatherapy, essential oils are increasingly part of our modern-day conversation. However, there is still so much to learn about the power hidden in nature.
So, let’s explore what they are and how they help.
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are plant extracts made by steaming or pressing various parts of a plant to capture the vital compounds that produce fragrance. Hidden in seeds, roots, flowers and bark are concentrated, volatile chemical compounds.
These natural compounds are what we call essential oils (or ethereal oils). It is essential in that it contains the essence of the plant’s fragrance and we often refer to the essential oil after the plant it’s extracted from, such as lavender oil.
While there are nearly a hundred different types of essential oils available, according to the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, the most popular essential oils are:
- clary sage
- cypress
- eucalyptus
- fennel
- geranium
- ginger
- helichrysum
- lavender
- lemon
- lemongrass
- mandarin
- neroli
- patchouli
- peppermint
- Roman chamomile
- rose
- rosemary
- tea tree
- vetiver
- ylang ylang
How Do Essential Oils Help?
Essential oils are used in aromatherapy which, in addition to the pleasant therapeutic aroma, works through skin absorption and through our sense of smell.
This results in numerous emotional, psychological and physical benefits such as reducing anxiety and stress, managing pain, reducing headaches and migraines, improving sleep quality, soothing sore joints, burns and infections and boosting the immune system to name but a few.
